About Lit for Littles Foundation

At Lit for Littles Foundation, we believe early literacy is about more than learning letters and sounds—it’s about connection, confidence, and belonging.

We are a community-centered nonprofit dedicated to nurturing a love of reading and language in children ages 0–6 through culturally rooted stories, interactive experiences, and family-centered literacy programming. Our work honors the idea that children learn best when they feel seen, valued, and supported—both in the stories they hear and the spaces where they grow.

Our Why

Lit for Littles Foundation was created from a deep understanding that representation matters early. When children see themselves reflected in books and storytelling experiences, they build confidence, curiosity, and a sense of identity that supports lifelong learning.

We exist to ensure that young children—especially those from historically underserved communities—have access to meaningful literacy experiences that celebrate culture, joy, and imagination. We believe that families and caregivers are a child’s first teachers, and our programs are designed to support them every step of the way.

What We Do

Through interactive storytimes, music and movement, and play-based literacy activities, Lit for Littles Foundation creates welcoming spaces where children and families can learn together. Our programs are designed to support early language development, social-emotional growth, and a genuine love of reading.

We partner with families, libraries, educators, and community organizations to bring literacy experiences directly into the spaces where children live, learn, and play.

Our Values

At the heart of Lit for Littles Foundation are values that guide everything we do:

  • Belonging – Every child deserves to feel represented and included
  • Joy – Learning should be playful, engaging, and fun
  • Community – Literacy grows stronger when families and communities grow together
  • Access – All children deserve opportunities to learn, regardless of background
  • Care – We lead with empathy, intention, and respect

Our Founder

Lit for Littles Foundation was founded by Tessie Butler, a librarian, early literacy advocate, and parent who understands firsthand the power of stories in shaping young lives.

With a background in library services and a deep commitment to early childhood education, Tessie created Lit for Littles Foundation to bridge the gap between access, representation, and meaningful literacy experiences. Her work is rooted in the belief that early learning should be inclusive, culturally affirming, and centered on the real needs of children and families.

Looking Ahead

Lit for Littles Foundation is committed to growing alongside the communities we serve. As we continue to expand our programs and partnerships, our focus remains the same: supporting little readers with big potential and creating literacy experiences that leave a lasting impact.

Thank you for being part of our story.
